Faster physio takes the weight off builder Mark’s shoulders

Self-employed builder and power lifter Mark Davies was one of more than 450 people treated at an NHS one-stop physiotherapy event in Tonbridge.

Mark, 63 and from the town, was able to begin treatment for his debilitating shoulder pain sooner, after being invited to one of our community appointment days.

The two-day sessions were set up to provide patients referred to the Integrated Musculoskeletal Services, with muscle, bone or joint conditions, quick and easy access to specialist clinicians closer to home, while waiting for an initial NHS appointment.

Mark said: “Coming here today has taken a weight off my mind, and my shoulders.

“It’s got the ball rolling on what to do about my pain, which is stopping me working, training and sleeping.

“Rather than waiting for a hospital appointment, I’ve been able to talk to a physiotherapist and specialist orthopaedic clinician in the same place on the same day, right round the corner from home.

“The team really listened to what matters most to me about treatment options and how I can get back to work and everyday life sooner.”

After an examination from a specialist physiotherapist, and chat with an orthopaedic clinician, Mark spent time in the rehabilitation hub, practising some exercises to do at home. He also talked to our Community Chronic Pain Service about coping methods for pain management.

KCHFT Head of Integrated Musculoskeletal Services, Kerry Smith, explained:

“By providing on-the-spot consultations, treatment, guided exercises and personalised care plans, we are reducing waiting times while making care more accessible.

“Over the two days, we managed the equivalent of several weeks’ worth of routine appointments.

“The community appointment days significantly exceed typical clinic capacity and allow us to initiate care on the same day.

“Most patients are able to get everything they need in a single visit, reducing the need for onward referrals or multiple appointments across different services.
