If you, or someone helping you, has been asked to change your dressing between clinic appointments, this leaflet will guide you through the process.

You will need:

  • a clean surface
  • non-sterile gauze squares
  • an absorbent dressing as prescribed, or in an emergency an Allevyn Gentle Border, Mepilex or similar dressing
  • forceps or, in an emergency, a cotton bud for packing the wound
  • surgical tape.

If needed, dressings can be purchased from pharmacies or supermarkets.

Signs of infection

Look out for the following signs:

  • increased pain
  • increased leakage from the wound
  • redness around the wound that spreads
  • feeling unwell with flu-like symptoms.

Redness around the wound may be caused by wound fluid irritating the skin, similar to nappy rash. If this happens, change the dressing more often.

A combination of these symptoms may indicate an infection and you may need antibiotics.

Contact your GP if you are concerned.

Emergency planning

This leaflet has been developed for use during a national or regional emergency, when clinics, GP surgeries and hospitals may only be able to provide emergency care.

Emergency supplies

Dressings can be purchased from pharmacies or supermarkets.

Arrangements may be in place for pharmacies to provide emergency supplies until a prescription can be obtained once the emergency situation has ended.
