Pilonidal sinus or bottom abscess

If you, or someone helping you, has been asked to change your dressing between clinic appointments, this leaflet will guide you through the process.
You will need:
- a clean surface
- gauze squares
- unless you have been given a cleansing product, use lukewarm water to clean the wound. If using tap water, run the tap for 30 seconds before use
- forceps or a wound probe if the wound cavity is deep
- the prescribed dressings, including one dressing for the wound cavity and a second dressing to cover the wound.
If needed, dressings can be purchased from pharmacies or supermarkets.
Signs of infection
Look out for:
- increased redness
- heat around the wound
- increased swelling
- increased discharge
- increased odour
- increased pain
- feeling generally unwell.
If you notice any of these signs, contact your GP or wound clinic.
Out of hours, contact NHS 111.
