EMLA cream

What is EMLA cream?
EMLA cream is a eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics. It works by numbing the surface of the skin for a short time. It usually comes in 5mg tubes and needs to be stored in a cool, dry place below 30 degrees and out of sight and reach of children.
How do I apply the cream?
- EMLA cream must be applied 60 minutes before the procedure.
- Make sure the skin is clean and dry. You will need to avoid putting the cream over any broken skin.
- Squeeze some cream onto the inside of the elbows and back of the hands – you can follow the photos below.
- Do not spread the cream out or rub it in.
- Place the occlusive sticky plaster over the top.
- Remove the paper lining (if present) and paper frame.
- The nurse or clinician will remove this dressing at the appointment.
