What is supervised tooth brushing and how can it help?

The free programme is about preventing tooth decay in children. Tooth decay is still very common in children and it can cause pain, stop children from eating, speaking, sleeping and also learning properly at school. North East London has a particularly high tooth decay rate in children. The programme involves children brushing their teeth in school with a fluoride toothpaste. The brushing is based on a hugely successful Scottish programme called ‘Childsmile’ which reduced tooth decay in children in Scotland significantly. The fluoride in the toothpaste the children brush with helps to make teeth stronger and so helps to reduce tooth decay.

How will it work?

Once the parent/guardian has returned this consent form then the child can begin brushing their teeth at school. The brushing can be done at any point during the school day. The method we use is called dry brushing so it does not use water and the children spit the toothpaste into a clean tissue once they have finished, which is then disposed of. The children brush with the guidance of their teacher for 2 minutes with a fluoride toothpaste. By spitting out the fluoride toothpaste at the end but not rinsing with water the toothpaste stays on the teeth for longer – allowing the fluoride to protect the teeth more. Our team provide all the kit to the school for free – each child is given their own brush that is labeled and stored in the brush bus to keep it clean.  If you do not wish for your child to take part please do not return the form.

Additional information

Please note that we use Aquafresh toothpaste which has been approved as Kosher by Rabbi Adler. A copy of this letter has been given to the school in case you would like to read it. Aquafresh toothpaste is vegetarian but not vegan.
