Garden fit for a queen opens at Victoria Hospital in Deal

What was once an uneven grassy area with limited access has been transformed into a new garden space for patients, visitors and colleagues at Victoria Hospital in Deal.

Developed by a team of 14 volunteers, the garden has been a true community effort. Colleagues from Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCHFT), which runs the hospital, including estates teams, therapy staff and local partners, worked together to agree on the final design. The project was made possible entirely through generous charitable donations, with match funding from the League of Friends to help turn the plans into reality.

New pathways connect the garden to the main entrance, providing improved access for wheelchair and walker users, while colourful planting and quiet areas offer space for reflection.

The garden was officially opened by Mairead McCormick, KCHFT’s Chief Executive, alongside Estates Officer Hannah Randall and Therapy Worker Kerry Lee, who have supported the garden volunteers and their work.

Speaking at the opening event, Mairead said: "Outdoor spaces can make a real difference to how people feel. The Queens’ Garden provides a welcoming place where patients, visitors and colleagues can pause, reflect and recharge. It is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when colleagues, volunteers and local partners work together. It is fitting that this opening event takes place on the 78th birthday of the NHS, celebrating the power of partnership and our shared commitment to supporting health and wellbeing. I would like to thank everyone who has helped bring this wonderful space to life."

Following a public vote between the final two options, the Queens' Garden was chosen in recognition of the hospital's links to Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth.

Sustainability has been a key focus throughout the project. The raised planters are made of recycled materials with natural materials being used wherever possible.

Sue Turner, who is the lead volunteer gardener at Victoria Hospital, said: “The garden has been shaped by the skilled garden volunteers who have raised funds, designed the layout and worked hard to develop the plans into the beautiful garden we see today. There has been collaboration with colleagues and local groups to choose the final design and the finishing touches. It is a space that truly belongs to the community it serves."

The garden is now open for patients, visitors and colleagues to enjoy throughout the year.
