From walking aids to home safety: Experts tackle your falls questions live

Attendees at our recent falls awareness webinar had the chance to put their most pressing questions directly to a panel of falls prevention specialists and left with advice to help them stay strong, steady and independent at home.

The free online event had 86 join live on the evening of Monday, 22 September. While the session began with expert presentations on the causes and prevention of falls, it was the interactive Q&A that truly brought the conversation to life.

Participants raised a range of concerns, including:

  • what to do if a loved one falls and needs specialist equipment like a lifting cushion

  • how to access local balance and strengthening classes or falls prevention groups

  • advice on choosing the right walking aids, especially for those with arthritis

  • how poor lighting, loose rugs, or even uneven pavements increase risks and what can be done about it

  • where to turn for help if hospital discharge processes don’t include falls assessments

  • support for people living with dementia who are at risk of falling.

Question were answered by experts Falls Prevention Coordinator Natalie Andrews, Physiotherapist Julie-Ann Brown and Falls Lead Narinder Sharma.

This direct access to specialists gave attendees reassurance, practical next steps and a better understanding of where to go for ongoing support.

“Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing,” said Natalie Andrews. “By asking questions and seeking advice, people can take small but important steps to protect themselves and maintain their independence.”

The event showed how valuable open conversations can be, connecting people with experts, sharing experiences and empowering communities with the tools to reduce their risk of falling.
