The calf muscle pump helps blood return from your lower limbs back to your heart. Adding simple exercises to your daily routine can help improve this pumping action.

Exercise is one of the four cornerstones of keeping your legs healthy, alongside good nutrition, skin care and support. You may find the following exercises helpful.

Ankle pumps while sitting

Sit comfortably in a chair.

Move your feet up and down using the full range of movement.

Staying active

It is important to stay active and walk short distances where possible. This can help improve blood circulation in your legs and feet.

When resting at home, elevating your legs can help reduce swelling. Ideally, your toes should be higher than your hips. Try to remain active and continue your usual daily routine and activities.

If you experience pain while carrying out these exercises, stop exercising and discuss this with your GP or healthcare professional.
