Superficial wound

If you, or someone helping you, has been asked to change your dressing between clinic appointments, this leaflet will guide you through the process.
You will need:
- a clean surface
- gauze squares
- unless you have been given a cleansing product, use lukewarm water for cleaning the wound. If using tap water, run the tap for 30 seconds before use
- the dressing prescribed by your clinician.
If needed, dressings can be purchased from pharmacies or supermarkets.
How to change the dressing
- remove the soiled dressing and dispose of it safely
- wash your hands with soap and water and dry them thoroughly using a clean towel or paper towel
- if the skin around the wound is soiled or wet, gently clean the area using moistened gauze
- apply the prescribed dressing
- wash your hands with soap and water and dry them thoroughly using a clean towel or paper towel.
How often should the dressing be changed?
Change the dressing as advised by your clinician.
Change the dressing sooner if fluid is leaking through the dressing.
