Powered by patients: Peter's journey into volunteering

Peter Drummie, 70, from Ashford, joined KCHFT as a pulmonary rehabilitation volunteer a year ago, after completing the programme himself as a patient.
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a structured programme of exercise, education and support designed to help people living with long-term lung conditions such as COPD, asthma and interstitial lung disease. It aims to improve physical fitness, reduce breathlessness and fatigue and build confidence in managing symptoms day to day.
After finishing his second course, Peter enjoyed the experience so much he did not want to leave. Turning to lead physiotherapist Gillian Fleming, he asked, “If I volunteer can I stay?” Thankfully, the answer was yes
Now a familiar face at weekly sessions, Peter helps put new patients at ease by sharing his own experience of living with pulmonary conditions. He supports individuals and groups through the six-week course, acting as their cheerleader, advocate and friendly encourager.
“I work with patients, asking them what works for them and what they would like to do, with the support of the wonderful physiotherapy team,” Peter said.
"Mentally, I feel I have contributed to helping someone cope with their diagnosis.
"I enjoy walking and talking with them while they exercise and getting to know their stories. I would recommend volunteering to other KCHFT patients who want to give something back.”
The pulmonary physiotherapy team fully includes Peter in sessions, involving him at every opportunity, including demonstrating warm-up and cool-down exercises.
Reflecting on his first year, Peter said: "I would like to thank everyone I have had the privilege to assist in cardio pulmonary rehabilitation. From physiotherapists and assistant physiotherapists to patients, and above all senior physiotherapist Gillian Fleming, who has trained and supported me every step of the way.”
Gillian Fleming, Clinical Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist, said: “Having Peter supporting our team has been great. His reliability, enthusiasm and friendly personality help create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Having someone who has walked in our patients’ shoes is a real asset.”
