Community trusts agree to appoint joint chair

Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust has agreed to appoint a joint chair with our community mental health partner Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust (KMMH).

The decision recognises that physical and mental health are deeply connected in the lives of their communities.

Mairead McCormick, KCHFT Chief Executive, added: “This step reflects the direction of the NHS’s new 10-year plan, which emphasises stronger partnerships and delivering more integrated and preventative care in our communities to support people to live well. If we are truly going to deliver neighbourhood health services that keep people well, physical and mental health services must work hand in glove.

“I also want to express my deep gratitude to John Goulston for his leadership and unwavering commitment during his eight-year tenure. His guidance has been invaluable and he will be much missed by everyone at KCHFT. We are fortunate he will continue as our chair until spring, ensuring a smooth transition.”

Sheila Stenson, Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Chief Executive, said: “This will ensure both organisations speak with a clear, united voice for the people of Kent and Medway. Physical and mental health are deeply connected and so we want to provide more joined-up services to help our communities live well with the very best care and support now and in the future.

“I would also like to share my personal thanks to our chair, Dr Jackie Craissati. For a decade, Jackie has served our organisation as a non-executive director and chair with dedication, compassion and a relentless focus on improvement. Her deep understanding and commitment has been instrumental in driving our organisation forward, always ensuring that we strive to do better for our patients. She will be missed by all.”

Dr Craissati will stand down as chair of Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust in spring 2026, to ensure a seamless transition to the new chair.

Both trusts will continue to operate with their own boards and executive teams, while benefiting from the consistency and alignment that a joint chair brings.
