Standing together for a safe and inclusive community

Mairead McCormick, Chief Executive at KCHFT

Over recent weeks, there’s been a noticeable shift in the political climate, marked by heightened public demonstrations and visible expressions of political views.

A large protest and counter-demonstration in Faversham, in response to immigration concerns, claimed national attention and significant police presence.

While the event remained largely peaceful, it was part of a wider pattern of public demonstrations, some of which have involved far-right groups and rising community tensions.

I am deeply disappointed to see these tensions play out so visibly in our communities. For many of you, whether you live or work in Faversham or elsewhere, this may have left you feeling unsettled and stirred up feelings of fear, anger, hostility, sadness, or isolation. I want to acknowledge that impact.

At KCHFT, we stand firmly by our values. We will not tolerate any form of racism, abuse or discrimination – towards our patients, our colleagues or our communities. We are proud of the diversity in our workforce and the strength it brings to our care.

Delivering care in people's homes and the community is a privilege and responsibility we do not take lightly. Our colleagues deserve nothing less than the respect and care they provide to patients every day.

If you experience or witness racism or abuse

We are dedicated to taking the most appropriate and serious measures. If you see or hear about acts of violence of aggression, Kent Police has a dedicated website where you can report these, which is being monitored regularly.

We have never, do not, and will never tolerate any form of racism, abuse or discrimination. We will take a zero-tolerance stance against racism towards our patients or colleagues, in whatever form that takes, even if it means difficult or uncomfortable decisions.

Support each other

While our commitment to delivering care for patients remains unwavering, it’s important we recognise recent events have left some of our colleagues and service users feeling afraid, isolated, or unwelcome and that is not acceptable.

Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of what makes the NHS strong, and at KCHFT, we are committed to building a culture where everyone feels safe, respected and supported.

Thank you for being part of our community and for standing with us in support of kindness, respect and care for all.

Mairead
