Celebrating volunteer power: From therapy dogs to heart heroes
Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCHFT) has celebrated the incredible dedication of its volunteers at a special end-of-year event, marking long-service milestones of between five and 20 years.
More than 70 volunteers were recognised for their commitment to supporting NHS services and making a real difference to patients and communities across Kent.
In total, KCHFT has more than 200 volunteers who give their time in a variety of roles – from gardening, to meeting and greeting patients at our sites, as well as sharing lived experiences with patients.
Among those honoured was Michele, who celebrates seven years of volunteering alongside her therapy dog, Mucci – a much-loved visitor to our community hospitals who has been volunteering for an impressive seven years.
Michele said: "It’s one of the nicest things you can possibly do. Everyone in the NHS is so nice to work with and we have many lovely memories of the people we’ve met and helped through the years."
The event also highlighted volunteers who give back after receiving care themselves. Michael Owen, who suffered a heart attack in 2018 and was supported by our Cardiac Rehab Service, shared:
"When I finished my rehab, I was asked if I would consider coming back as a volunteer, which I did. In my role I talk to new patients who have had recent heart attacks or heart problems, and I join in with the exercises. I think one of the most important things I do is talking to people – that’s what features greatly in my life."
Chief Executive Mairead McCormick added: "We really value our volunteers and the contributions they make to our services every day. Thank you for all you do."
Volunteers are at the heart of KCHFT, supporting patients and colleagues in countless ways. Their dedication and compassion make a lasting impact on people’s lives.
