Finding friendship through volunteering
Volunteering at the Westbrook House Stroke Unit in Margate has brought more than just smiles to patients — it has also sparked a wonderful friendship.

Volunteers Hilary and Paula.
Paula and Hilary met while volunteering on the stroke ward, after they both saw the opportunity on our website and were encouraged by friends to get involved. Now, they buddy up each week to bring laughter, companionship and comfort to patients during their recovery.
Paula said: “Volunteering can make you feel uplifted; the patients and their carers often say thank you for volunteering. It is so nice to support each patient’s journey and see them get discharged to go home.”
Hilary, who previously volunteered at her husband’s care home, wanted to continue helping others after moving house. Already supporting people at the Dementia Centre in Cliftonville, she still had more time to spare.
Paula, who used to work for Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The NHS is always looking for volunteers, so this was a great place to start. The team are great, if one of us is missing the staff always ask where the other one is.”
Hilary added: “Buddying up to volunteer has been great for us, I miss Paula when she is not here!”
Together, the pair chat with patients, listen to life stories and help lift spirits through activities and laughter. They’ve also learned more about stroke care — from assessment to rehabilitation — and recently contributed to a discussion about a patient’s needs at home, including installing handrails for safety.
They both agreed: “We would 100 per cent recommend volunteering to others. It is really satisfying and inspiring to see people’s journeys. Do sign up and give it a go!”
