Debbie finds joy and community through volunteering at Edenbridge
For more than eight years, Debbie (pictured) has been a friendly face at the Edenbridge day centre, giving her time, energy and kindness as a volunteer with Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCHFT).
Debbie first came across the opportunity eight years ago, not long after she retired. Having always worked in roles supporting people who were vulnerable, she felt something was missing from her life. When she saw an advert in the local paper asking for volunteers at the old Edenbridge Memorial Health Centre, she decided to find out more.
“I contacted the volunteer team and went along to visit,” Debbie explained. “The team were so welcoming. I stayed for a coffee, met the people attending, and learned what the role involved. From the very first visit, I felt at home.”
Since then, Debbie has become an integral part of the centre. Whether she’s helping someone with a crossword, joining in a group quiz, celebrating birthdays, or chatting over lunch, she finds joy in the everyday moments that make a difference.
“I really enjoy volunteering at the day centre – every shift has lots of laughs and I feel part of the team here,” she said. “It’s wonderful getting to know the people, especially when they first join and finding out what makes them smile. Volunteering allows me to help include them in activities, to socialise and to simply make their day a little brighter. It’s such a lovely environment and you really do feel part of a community.”
Debbie also highlights how flexible volunteering can be. Her typical day starts at 10am and finishes around 2.30pm, with time to share lunch with staff, other volunteers and service users. Sometimes the centre even enjoys a visit from therapy dog Mucci.
For Debbie, volunteering is not only about giving back but also about gaining something special herself.
“This role is great for building skills and experience with people and NHS staff. But more than that, it’s about connection. I’d recommend it to anyone who has some time to give – you’ll get so much in return.”
