Never too late to start volunteering
At 91 years old, Audrey is proof that it’s never too late to make a difference. She has been volunteering with Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCHFT) for more than 13 years and she still loves every moment.
Audrey first started volunteering at Sevenoaks, before being asked to join the day centre at Edenbridge Memorial Hospital, where volunteers were needed. She has been a valued member of the team ever since.
“The centre in Edenbridge had a peaceful atmosphere and everyone was so pleased to see you when you arrived,” said Audrey. “It is a real pleasure to be with people volunteering. The staff and service users make you feel needed and valued.”
Audrey enjoys the variety of activities at the centre, from games to conversations that bring people together. “There's endless activities to do in the day centre – no one is ever bored. You enjoy getting to know the group and their stories. You gain skills such as patience and insights into people’s lives that are unimaginable.”
For Audrey, volunteering isn’t just rewarding – it’s grounding. "Volunteering can give you routine and I’d recommend it to others. At 91, I find it relaxing. It’s an easy role to help with and it doesn’t matter what age you are. If you have any spare time, we would be pleased to see you. It is so grounding to know people want your help.”
