‘They saw me, not my stroke’: Hayley’s journey back to independence

When Hayley had a stroke at 61, the life she knew changed suddenly.Hayley in a garden setting by a wooden structure

Independent, determined and used to doing things for herself, she found herself navigating a world where even the most ordinary tasks could feel completely different.

“I’ve always been very independent,” said Hayley. “My personality, my experiences and the way I’ve lived my life have all shaped who I am. When I had my stroke, that didn’t suddenly disappear.

“I did not want to be seen as a stroke victim. I was someone who had a stroke and recovered and that’s what the team helped me do.”

Following her stroke, Hayley was supported at home by the stroke rehabilitation team. For her, one of the most important things about their care was that they didn't just focus on what her stroke had taken away. They took the time to understand her.

“They treated me as a whole person,” she said. “They understood my determination and knew that was going to be important in my recovery. They saw me as an individual.”

That understanding meant supporting Hayley to regain her independence in ways that mattered in her everyday life.

One moment in particular has stayed with her.

“I decided I was going to walk to the supermarket,” she said. “I got there and I was absolutely exhausted. I knew I could get the bus back, but then I realised I didn't know how to get the bus.

“I'd had the absolute joy of being able to walk there and then the devastation of realising I couldn't work out how to get home.”

It would have been easy to focus on what Hayley couldn't do. Instead, the team's response helped her look forward.

Three women laughing together in front of a wall.“When I told Sam Andrew, Stroke Specialist Occupational Therapist, she didn't say, ‘You shouldn't have done that.’ She said, ‘OK, what could you do next time? How could you get back?’”

For Hayley, that response summed up the support she received. Rather than taking away her independence or telling her what she couldn't do, the team helped her find ways to keep moving forward.

Her recovery wasn't only about physical progress either. There were moments of frustration, exhaustion and emotion as Hayley adjusted to what had happened to her. The team recognised those challenges too and arranged early mental health support.

At home treatment meant rehabilitation could be rooted in Hayley's own life, helping her work towards the everyday things that mattered to her and rebuild her confidence and independence.

The team brought their clinical expertise, but they also brought something just as important: the ability to listen, understand who Hayley was and recognise the person behind the stroke.

“I just want to say thank you to Sam and her team,” said Hayley.

For Hayley, recovery wasn't about becoming a different person after her stroke. It was about being supported to find her way back to herself.
