Roger rolls ahead with South East DriveAbility

Roger King, 88, has become the first person to receive a mobility scooter and powered wheelchair assessment at South East DriveAbility in Aylesford. The new service helps people stay independent and safe while using powered mobility equipment.

Roger, a former bank manager and military man from Brabourne Lees came to the centre to explore safer, more suitable options for his changing mobility needs. With weakness in his legs, Roger finds walking and standing increasingly difficult, but remains determined to stay active, especially in his garden, which he’s had to scale back this year.

“I used to be out there for hours,” he said. “Now my legs start to ache and I have to go in. I won’t be growing much next year.”

South East DriveAbility offers a comprehensive two-hour assessment, including physical and cognitive checks, vision screening, and a practical drive on a standardised route. Lessons include reading number plates at 12.5 metres, navigating curbs, doing three-point turns, and using pedestrian crossings safely.

Roger trialled two class 3 scooters and a powered wheelchair and discussed future options including vehicle adaptations and hoists. With nine grandchildren and a busy family life, staying mobile is key.

Matthew Collins, clinical driving advisor and occupational therapist, said: “This service helps people settle their anxieties about using scooters or wheelchairs. It’s not just about the equipment — it’s about building confidence and helping people and their families understand how it can support independence.”

Anu Varshney, service manager, added: “We’re proud to offer a safe, supportive space where people can explore their mobility options. It’s about helping people stay connected to their communities and live life on their terms."
