Patricia beat her fear of falling: Join our free webinar to learn how you can too

For many older people, the risk of falling is frightening and can be life-changing. But many falls can be prevented with the right knowledge, support and simple daily habits.

After suffering two serious falls, 87-year-old Patricia Willingham from Herne Bay was referred by her GP to a balance and strengthening class at the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital.

Photo of Patricia sitting in a chair smiling to the camera.“I was nervous at first, but the group has given me my confidence back,” said Patricia. “We start with chair-based exercises, then build up to standing, marching on the spot, stretches and lunges. With the support of the class, I’ve regained strength, balance and independence. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and I feel a difference every week I attend.”

Patricia’s story is not unusual. Every year, one in three people over 65 experiences a fall and for those over 80, nearly half will fall at least once-a-year.

The 12-week balance and strengthening class, is just one of the ways Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCHFT) supports people who are at risk of falling from staying steady on their feet and more independent at home.

To help older adults and their families take proactive steps toward safety and independence, KCHFT is hosting a falls prevention webinar at 6pm on Monday, 22 September. This free, interactive event will provide expert advice, practical strategies and encouragement for anyone wanting to stay healthy, steady and confident at home.

During the session, attendees will:

  • learn easy, at-home exercises to improve strength, balance, and stability
  • discover practical tips for making the home environment safer
  • hear from Patricia and other patient’s real-life stories, showing how support can transform lives
  • take part in a live Q&A with KCHFT falls prevention specialists.

“Falling doesn’t have to be an inevitable part of ageing,” said Natalie Andrews, Falls Prevention Coordinator. “With the right support, people can overcome the fear of falling, build confidence and protect their independence.”

The webinar is open to adults, caregivers, family members and anyone concerned about falls prevention.
