What is pulsed shortwave therapy?
It is an electrotherapy treatment which uses a drum-type applicator that will send high frequency, shortwave energy to the area of the body to be treated.
What are the benefits and risks of treatment?
This treatment reduces swelling and also improves blood flow and healing in the area being treated.
You should not receive this treatment if you:
- have a cardiac pacemaker, spinal stimulator or other electrical implant
- are pregnant
- have an active infection or other illness
- have cancer.
Hearing aids should be removed and mobile phones turned off.
What will pulsed shortwave therapy feel like?
The applicator is placed over the area to be treated close to or just touching the skin. With some settings it may be possible, during the treatment, to feel a mild warmth in the treated area. It should not feel hot. There is no other sensation with this treatment.
Is any special preparation required before treatment?
No preparation is required before your treatment.
What happens on the day of treatment?
It is important to remove all metal objects before treatment. Please remove watches and jewellery. Items with magnetic strips (credit cards etc.) or electronics (remote keys, organiser’s etc.) should be kept clear.
If you have a pacemaker, implant or hearing aid, you must let your therapist know before treatment.
What do I need to know or do after treatment?
The treatment for your condition may require more than one visit. Your therapist will advise you about this.
If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask your therapist.
