Helping smokers to quit: One to one advisor training

About this course

1 day course

This course provides participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to deliver effective one-to-one support for people that smoke. Those who complete the course are will be an active part of the Kent Community Health NHS Trust Stop Smoking Service (KCHT SSS).

Participants will need to complete and pass the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT) Practitioner training as a pre-requisite to this course.

Target group

Anyone wanting to offer one-to-one smoking cessation support to help people quit smoking. Participants to the course will need approval from KCHT SSS and their own Managers to become Smoking Cessation Advisers for KCHT SSS.

Aim

At the completion of the training participants will be able to deliver an effective one-to-one quit smoking programme as part of KCHT SSS.

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will:

  • have had the opportunity to review and build on their knowledge gained on the NCSCT Practitioner training and understand this in relation to the population of UK and Kent.
  • understand the procedures required to fulfil this role
  • understand how to ensure communication with individuals is effective to support health behaviour change in relation to smoking.
  • have the opportunity to practice interventions within a safe environment

Note: This training may incur a charge dependant on circumstances; trained advisers will be expected to achieve minimum standards and targets. Not meeting these may result in the Stop Smoking Service requesting a payment for training.
