Mums and babies welcome at new breastfeeding room

A free breastfeeding room is now available for mums to use when they’re out in Ashford town centre.

The NHS One You shop, situated in the Park Mall shopping centre, has recently opened a dedicated room that boasts a few home comforts such as a comfy chair, foot stall and radio. There are also baby changing facilities on site too.

But most important of all is that everyone is welcome to pop in – no appointment is necessary and mums do not have to be accessing any of the services in the One You shop, run by Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Mum-of-two Sarah Jevons was keen to try it out when three month old baby Emmeline needed a feed.

She said: “It can be difficult to feed a baby when you’re in town so it’s great to know this facility is here, it’s so convenient and such a good idea. It’s lovely to know there’s somewhere to come that is free – and you don’t need to buy that coffee you didn’t want in the first place. It’s non-judgemental, with no-one looking at you as you feed, and everyone is friendly.

“I’m passionate about supporting mums to breastfeed and I volunteer as part of the breastfeeding peer support group in the town. This room gives me the opportunity to take a moment with my baby, regroup with a few minutes to myself. It’s a real safe haven.”

Beverley Crossland, One You Team Lead for Ashford, said: “Our aim is to make people comfortable and welcome. We’re here to help and if they want to find out about any other services on offer in the shop, we can help.”

The One You shop is open from 9.30am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and 9.30am to 1pm on Saturdays. The shop is run by Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust.
